Bloodscent curls in the air, consuming, distracting. It is morning, although the sun is hidden behind a curtain of clouds. Rain smooths the ragged edges of the world. Tansypaw rises from her nest, gingerly, and ignores the curious and concerned eyes that track her as she hurries from the apprentices’ den.

She immediately makes her way over to a sizable puddle, from which her reflection stares back, murky and distorted. Recognizable still. A wound rests on her shoulder, a perfect impression of teeth. The black fur surrounding it is darkened with absorbed blood. Her main concern is a scratch, superficial, that sits crooked on the bridge of her nose. The fur there is too thin to absorb the blood, and so it mixes with rivulets of rain that trail down her face, until it drips from her chin, pink.

Every drip sends further ripples over the puddle, and her reflection warps and shivers with it. Tansypaw blinks rapidly, as if it is a problem with her eyes and not with the nature of puddles. This is not the first time Tansypaw has woken bloody, but it is the first time she’s woken wearing a mark on her face.

With everything wrong with her, Tansypaw has always thought this: At least she is pretty. Not a virtue or a skill, but it was something. Something that was hers, something she could laud over others if she so desired. Vapid, maybe. Vainglorious. Too grand a word for her, no, shallow is more suiting. The mark will not scar, Tansypaw thinks, it has as much depth as herself. No longer it bleeds, and already the rain has washed it clean, running clear down her face once more.

    Shallow, yes.

The wound on her side is far more serious, and yet Tansypaw stares at the imperfect approximation of her face in the water, at the scratch on her nose, barely visible against the brown water, and Tansypaw finds herself unable to care about the throbbing from her shoulder. Around her, the steady rain taps out a melody, to which Tansypaw doesn’t listen.

"tansypaw?" a voice calls out softly, poking her head from the apprentice den. as soon as the other molly had woken, she had rushed out of the den without looking back. daisypaw wasn't sure why, and being odd wasn't unlike tansypaw, but..still. she was confused, worried for the apprentice. why was she rushing out of the den so early? the sun wasn't entirely up yet. truth be told, tansypaw moving so quickly had woken daisypaw; but daisypaw was never a deep sleeper, anyways.

she didn't know if she should go over or not. when tansypaw had left, she had caught a huge whiff of the pungent scent of blood, the metallic scent. she thought perhaps it was a figment of her imagination, it was her motherly side coming out, the side of her that had spent way too much time in the medicine cat den with sick and injured patients. but she still feared. she didn't really want to get wet, though, if she didn't need to. she knew tansypaw wouldn't be honest with her, even if it was a small reason why she had ran out of the den. "is everything okay?" a bad dream, perhaps.

It had been mere days since Icepaw had found out that StarClan had whispered her name to their medicine cat, choosing her for the path of herbs and remedies rather than that of a warrior. The white tabby was excited, of course, because she had been hoping they would. It just felt...right.
She was so excited she could hardly sleep, and woke early before the sun was even fully up, hoping to greet the day and learn as much as possible while daylight lasted. But as sunrise came, a light rain moved in and Icepaw watched with wide indigo eyes from the mouth of the medicine den.
So she spotted Tansypaw followed rapidly by Daisypaw when they left the apprentices' den. Curious, the little white she-cat trotted after them. She hadn't been a warrior apprentice for long, but long enough to form a few friendships. Tansypaw had always been rather distant and difficult to speak to, but Icepaw was patient and persistent.
Rounding a bend, she found the pair and asked soflty, "is everything okay?"

hearing icepaw's voice, daisypaw glanced over as the other medicine cat apprentice made her way to the pair. daisypaw and icepaw had been spending a decent amount of time together nowadays considering they were both training together on the path of medicine cat duties, but she still didn't know the apprentice super well. she was sure that would change. something she had come to learn about the apprentice though, was that she was very compassionate with her clanmates and getting to know them. so it was no surprise that she was also out here, checking on tansypaw.

she didn't say anything yet though; she would wait for tansypaw to respond to both their similar questions.

Their worry shouldn't be any surprise to Tansypaw. It shouldn't, and yet it is. A sting, the insistent thought that they wouldn't care if it wasn't their duty to care. “You'll get wet if you sit out here for too long.” Too late for that. The rain still drums out a steady beat, and Tansypaw looks up long enough to look at who has joined her. Daisypaw, who might just be her friend. Tansypaw hasn't asked, but she thinks and she hopes; but Daisypaw needn't be burdened with Tansypaw. She is deserving of friends who are good.

    And then there is Icepaw.

Tansypaw looks at Icepaw's face, and then looks down to the point where her legs taper into her paws because it's easier than seeing the blue of her eyes. She feels both like she should say something and never speak again, and it's a terrible feeling, and maybe Tansypaw hates Icepaw. Tansypaw knows the feeling of hate well, and it's nothing like this, but it swells strongly in her chest in the same way and it warms her ears in the same way and-

Hi,” She says, and then immediately thinks that it is possibly the stupidest thing she could have said. Hi?I'm going to uh- I'm just... hi?Again? AGAIN?But I already said that so uh, hey.” Tansypaw shifts then, trying to hide her still bloodied shoulder from sight, “You really will get all wet out here if you uh- the both of you will anyway. I was just looking at this puddle.

Fond amusement swelled to life in Icepaw's chest at Tansypaw's fumbling words. Her ears twitched with amusement and she held in a purr for the other apprentice's sake, not wanting the other she-cat to think Icepaw was laughing at her. She just thought Tansypaw was kind of...cute when she was flustered. Clearing her throat, the white tabby's eyes strayed to the shoulder wound Tansypaw was so clearly trying to hide from them. Indigo eyes widening with worry, completely ignoring the warning about getting wet in the rain, Icepaw took a tentative step forward.
"Tansypaw, your shoulder..." worried eyes flicked up to the other apprentice's face. "I can help, if you'd like." Icepaw didn't know if Tansypaw would accept her help, but she offered anyway. Even if it wasn't her duty, Icepaw would still worry, because she wanted Tansypaw to be her friend, wanted her to know that she cared - even if she wasn't sure why yet herself.

the chubby apprentice didn't take tansypaw's words too heavily, as she wasn't planning on going back inside until she figured out what was going on with the apprentice. this seemed weird! the medicine cat apprentice flicked her tail, looking over at icepaw as the two seemed to have some sort of...weird conversation type thing going on. daisypaw wasn't entirely sure what was going on between the two of them, though. but her ears perked when she heard icepaw mention her shoulder - what was wrong with tansypaw's shoulder?

daisypaw peered over and sure enough icepaw had found a wound. it didn't look too good - it probably hurt, with the rain hitting it. "i'll go get cobwebs, and broom," she told icepaw, not waiting to see what tansypaw would say. she wasn't just going to let the apprentice sit here and dwell in pain and not get treated for it!

daisypaw turned tail to pad into the medicine den, her green eyes flicking around to see what she could find. she immediately spotted the cobwebs, but - oh, it seemed they were out of broom plant. no worries though, she saw comfrey and that would work just as well! she grabbed a few in her maw along with cobwebs before turning to leave the den, making her way back over to the two and lightly putting the herbs on the ground. "icepaw, can you help me make a poultice?"

The speed in which the situation goes from being sort of under control to completely out of control leaves Tansypaw silent for a stunned moment. In spite of, or perhaps because of, Tansypaw's bests efforts to hide her injury, Icepaw notices, and Daisypaw is quick to go into action. “I don't- it- don't waste your herbs on this,” She tells Icepaw in Daisypaw's absence then, as Daisypaw returns, “I don't need all of this, save it for- there are a lot of things that can happen, it should be for emergencies.

Those herbs all looked important. Tansypaw eyes them warily. Leafbare would make them harder to come by, wouldn't it? What if the clan ran out because they were used on Tansypaw? She was bound to be injured, her night-time training promised as much. If she wanted it to remain a secret, she would need to be better at hiding the scuffs. “Look, it's, uh, if you want a better look at it, you can see that it isn't, it isn't really big or anything. I must of just, I just rolled over on a thorn or something in my nest. Truthfully.

Or a set of thorns in the eerie shape of a set of teeth. Might as well have been.

What was important was Tansypaw had won. What was important was that the mark on her face was shallow enough that it was practically invisible. What was important was she could help her clan this way. “To be honest, it doesn't even hurt. So don't make any poultice or worry about me or anything!

"even if its small, it can still get infected," daisypaw softly argued back, so kindly that it barely would seem like an argument. "i like you, tansypaw, and i don't want to risk it getting worse." she had a mouthful of comfrey already, chewing it, spitting it into her paw - and she shuffled a bit closer to the younger apprentice, peering at the wound. "thats not a thorn!" she mused, her eyes widening a bit. "oh - that looks like it hurts. what happened to you?"

daisypaw often saw the good in people, so for some reason she believed that tansypaw was going to tell her the truth and then they could move on with their lives. but she didn't realize that the other apprentice had such a big secret. "stand still," she told her, moving her paw in an attempt to push the comfrey poultice onto her wound.
