    ★ fell in love in october ★


    it's fitting that the weather is gloomy. the woman sighs as she strides, muddy pawed and tangle furred, along the path. at least, she thinks, today is better than yesterday. her parents have taken to ignoring her, and the clan has finally stopped staring. they don't mess up her name anyway, thank the stars. still, as the mist shifts into an annoying drizzle, shadowclan's most eager warrior is decidedly... less. a fat squirrel clutched in her jaws is the only sign of a somewhat successful hunt, but the girl will glare at any who dare scoff at her meager catch. it's been a long day. shaking her fur out, darkflame pauses at the entrance to camp, trying to wipe some of the mud from her paws. no use- her long fur has seemingly absorbed the substance. curse her parents' genes. with a sigh, she'll enter camp, broad shoulders scraping the top of the tunnel as she walks.


    it's with great strides that the woman makes her way towards the prey pile, setting the squirrel half-heartedly upon it. the clan is bustling, camp buzzing like a beehive as warriors hurry to and fro, the young voices of apprentices complaining about their duties mingling with the excited squeaks of kittens playing in puddles. darkflame manages a small smile as she looks around at it all, heart lightening as her bad mood begins to lift. it's with a somewhat lighter step that she makes her way towards the warriors' den, seating herself beneath an overhanging bramble just outside of it. it takes some effort to groom her fur, but, several minutes later, she finally looks up. a watery sun peaks shyly out of gloomy clouds, casting a pale light down upon shadowclan's camp. "finally," she mutters, yawning. "at least the sun's coming out for the end of the day."

    There was always something to love. Even under gray skies and rain, ShadowClan was beautiful. Slackfoot tended to appreciate the beauty of rain far more when he was in a dry, warm nest. Tucked in the warrior's den, preferably. Movement from outside is what draws Slackfoot to his paws. He stands and slips into the mouth of the den, first looking at Darkflame in profile, then looking up into the sky, seeing what it is that Darkflame is looking to.

    The sun, appearing at last. Slackfoot turns his head away, looking back to Darkflame. A purple after-image of the sun drifts downwards in his vision, over Darkflame's face. ”It wanted to get one last look at us before going to sleep,” They aren't his words, but they are words he holds fondly in his chest. Who was it to say that to him? It didn't truly matter who to Slackfoot. The feeling, a remembered warmth blooming in his chest, is what matters. Perhaps Darkflame wouldn't find the same comfort in those words as Slackfoot finds, but maybe someday she would.

    ”Eventful day?” Slackfoot prompts, sitting carefully beside Darkflame.

    OWLPAW

    SHADOWCLAN / APPRENTICE / CHOCOLATE CHARCOAL TABBY


    Owlpaw had noticed that both Slackfoot and Darkflame were sitting beside one another, waiting the fall of the sun on the horizon. For them, it meant peace. For him, it meant more training. It meant Coyoteburr would have him fight another apprentice from a different clan, to prove that he belonged there. To prove that he deserved to live. The tom looked at the two and decided that it would be best to play nice with the others. The chocolate bengal padded over to the two and sat down as well. He didn't speak, he only sat there. Gathering intel on the events of his other clanmates' days, learning about who they were. He was deciding if they were worthy of his loyalty. If they proved to be warriors that were ones to lay on their backs and surrender, if they seemed weak, he'd dismiss them. If not, they would know his loyalty. His endless and unwavering loyalty. His former mentor, the one that had passed away, was one that had proven themselves many times over. Owlpaw missed the warrior tremendously. Now, he had to find himself another mentor. One that would prove to be beneficial to him. 

    Sitting there, the tom unsheathed his claws on his one paw and brought it close to his face so that he could inspect it. Flexing and unflexing his claws, admiring them for their worth. The tom's copper gaze was fixated as if debating to use them. However, it was more to practice in case a battle ever appeared before him. In the blink of an eye, Owlpaw wanted to be able to fight. Even the smallest bit of training, even if it meant practicing withdrawing his claws, then so be it.

    with a nod toward her clanmate, the woman watches the sun, whiskers twitching at slackfoot's observation. "i suppose so," she hums thoughtfully. it's a very philisophical way of looking at things- the sun obviously doesn't have eyes of itself, but darkflame likes the sentiment. she sighs to herself, settling more comfortably beside the tom. "it's just nice to be dry." a yawn stretches her mouth, and she is vaguely aware of owlpaw moving closer towards them. she offers him a smile.


    "lots of hunting today," she'll say in response to slackfoot's question, gesturing to the freshkll pile, which is full. "so i'm exhausted." she twitches her whiskers. "how about you? or owlpaw?" she wonders if he'll talk- he's closed off.

    Slackfoot's ears turn towards Owlpaw before his head follows, inspecting the apprentice. Quiet, but Slackfoot must wonder if that is his natural state, or if he is in thought. ”You'll wear the tips off if you keep at that,” Slackfoot murmurs, nodding his head to Owlpaw's claws. It's just one of those things one says when they see someone fiddling with their claws, just as one says their ears will grow taller if they eat too many rabbits. Nonsense, but the fun kind of nonsense.

    His attention returns to Darkflame as she speaks, pausing to think before he responds, ”A little water on one's fur makes them appreciate being dry all the more,” The look he gives her is sly, ”But I find just seeing someone come in sopping wet has the same effect.”

    He follows her gesture, ”When I eat, I'll be sure to give you my thanks,” It was nice seeing a full freshkill pile. Comforting. ”I helped in the nursery today, StarClan knows the queens can use it.” When he moves on, Slackfoot wonders if he'll keep referring to StarClan, or if the name of some other group's ancestors will take their place in his thoughts.
