DEEP ROOTS ARE NOT REACHED BY THE FROST [ stepping up ] Empty DEEP ROOTS ARE NOT REACHED BY THE FROST [ stepping up ]

fell in love in october

the sudden storm passes with crackling lightning, the daylight returning with a dark golden hue to the humming air as she creeps out of her den, into the clearing where a sight awaits her. the camp is in shambles but not too horribly messed up. the dens have held up and the kits are already scampering from their den to play in the puddles. the deputy of shadowclan breathes a sigh. nothing has happened.

she picks her way through the debris, nodding to her clanmates who have begun to emerge from their hideaways. pausing at the entrance to brindlestar's den, she takes a breath, ready to update her leader on the state of things. the woman hasn't been right since her son and mate's deaths. she worries for the dappled femme, knows her leader won't be able to handle much more loss. darkflame is going to be there for her though, is going to hoist her up and help her stand. imagine her shock when she enters the den. her jaw drops, her eyes widening, breathing becoming shallow. there, in the nest where she has so often visited her friend, lays the leader, still.

her body is still warm, but it's stiffening, and when darkflame nudges brindlestar, she does not move. a cry of anguish comes from her maw before she can stop it, tears flooding her vision. stumbling from the den, she calls for attention, hoping the clan can't see how shaken up she is. "brindlestar is dead."

having been helping cleaning up the camp with a few of the other apprentices who had been assigned to do so, she only half heard what darkflame announced. she heard her mother's name called, brindlestar, but she didn't hear the words that had came before it. she flicked her tail, figuring it as just an announcement that had come from her mom; but her pelt spiked whenever she heard cries and questions coming from her clanmates. what had her mom said? she glanced around, lashing her tail, and she heard someone repeat the deputy's words. brindlestar was dead.

her heart dropped. her mom was dead? "what?" she croaked, her eyes flicking up to stare at darkflame. that couldn't be right! there was..no way. what happened? she dropped the twigs that had been in her mouth, darting towards the leader's den to see her mom. she had to see for herself.  "mom?" she whined, weaving past the deputy to enter the den. and sure enough, there her mom lay. "mom!"

TANSYPAW
shadowclan apprentice | torbie | dsh | tags

She's never seen a dead body before.

It's the first thought she has when her mentor makes the announcement, and then guilt washes over Tansypaw. Daisypaw darts into the den, stricken, and Tansypaw wonders how she would feel if her own mother was to die, and instantly she regrets her thought even more. It makes something feel heavy in her throat, makes her feel as though her tongue has grown too large for her mouth, or like she has something burning in her chest.

When Tansypaw approaches the mouth of the den, she sees Daisypaw standing over her mother, and suddenly Tansypaw understands the weight of this death. Brindlestar is dead, and she isn't coming back. She's with StarClan, and she is with StarClan for good. Frightened, Tansypaw turns and buried her face in Darkflame's chest.

Things are going to change,” Tansypaw says, and the guilt builds. That was her first concern? Her first words after Brindlestar has died? Still, the fear claws at her, insistent. It bubbles out of her in hurried words, muffled against Darkflame's fur, ”What happens now?
